REDISCOVERING THE PAST
The oldest among several similarly formed European East India Companies, the British India Company was granted an English Royal Charter, under the name Governor and Company of Merchants of London Trading into the East Indies, by Elizabeth I in December 1600.
Trading mainly in Cotton, Silk, Indigo Dye, Saltpetre, Tea, and Opium, the Company long held a privileged position in relation to the English, and later the British Government. As a result, it was frequently granted special rights and privileges, including trade monopolies and exemptions.
Following the events of the Indian Rebellion of 1857, and under the Government of India Act 1858, the Company itself was finally dissolved on 1 January 1874, as a result of the East India Stock Dividend Redemption Act. |

FUTURE HISTORY IN THE MAKING
On 14th September 2004, following a series of intense negotiations, The British East India Company was re-registered by Captain William G. MacDonald.
Today, the Company has become solely involved in international trade, and extends its business capabilities through a powerful alliance network and a diverse portfolio of companies and activities from whisky distillation, steel production, steel plant and machinery, construction to telecommunications and shipping.
The British East India Company works with forward thinking individuals from around the world, particularly those who are within the Commonwealth, and respects the good work that The Commonwealth Development Corporation has made over the years, particularly in Africa. |
